Sometimes it feels that breastfeeding is like a 'vanishing art' in United States and some other countries that have been influenced a lot by US culture.  However, in reality women do still breastfeed; in US about 70% try it in the hospital.  After that the numbers quickly dwindle down so that at 6 months only about 30% of babies get any breastmilk at all (and many of those are not exclusively breastfed).

The other reason we don't see a lot of breastfeeding going on is because many women are afraid to do it in public or even in front of relatives or friends.  Why is that?  What makes women fearful and shameful of nursing their babies when other people are present?

The word shame can clue you in: instead of being just the normal every-day way of babyfeeding, breastfeeding is connected with exposing one's breasts. And since breasts are connected with sex, breastfeeding is connected with words 'indecent' and 'shameful'.

But there is nothing about breasts that makes the inherently sexually arousing to men - it is the cultural influences and the taboo that teaches men to think that way. Without that influence we would not think breasts of being connected to sexual behavior.

In many other cultures and in times past woman's breasts have not been anything else but a baby-feeding and nurturing part of female body.  That is what they were created for -- not something that should create lust or 'drive men on'.

Breasts are just a body part like ankles and legs and neck and back and cheeks: your whole body enjoys those intimate moments between husband and wife, but that does not mean that the mere act of seeing ankles, legs, necks, backs, toes, etc. should inspire you sexually.

The more people see breastfeeding women or pictures of such, the more they are seeing the REAL purpose of breasts, and the more that can help to take the sexual connotation away from female breast.
