I just turned 14 years old on March 7th 2007. I got my period at around February of 2006, a month before my birthday. But I started growing my breasts a little before that. Now at the age of 14 my breasts are around 36 A. My mom has either D's or DD's (more on the DD side). I got accepted to Brooklyn Tech High School New York and going to a big school means going to a school of girls with large breasts. I'll be an outcast. I'll be going this...... um..September. My mom keeps saying they'll grow, they'll grow but what else are they supposed to say, right? Do you have any idea if they'll grow any bigger? I am always being teased at school, I mean why not? I should have bigger breasts in the 8th grade by now. I'm just hoping they'll grow to a B cup before Sept. Help me!! Thanks for the time and I just love your site, but I'm still worried.

Hi,
I suspect that your breasts won't grow to D or C if they are an A cup now. They are still developing though because that continues for a few years after you get your period ,and you got yours only 1 year ago.

So I can't tell for sure if they will "reach" B cup or not. But like you probably realize, A cup breasts are PERFECTLY NORMAL and plenty of women have those, and they can breastfeed just fine and be attractive.

It's not in the breast size. Girls might be comparing among themselves, but *mature* men don't care, babies don't care. It's all fine. You have the milk ducts and the glands are still growing... your breasts are perfectly normal, and perfect. Read our page Small breasts.

I'm 11 years old and I want bigger breasts because all my friends have bigger breasts than me and they're 1 and 2 years younger than me. I have a few pimples, a little pubic hair on my vagina have smelly under arms but no hair on my underarms. My mom has breasts the size of a 14 year old and my grandma has gigantic breasts. Also they all wear bras and I don't even need one. My breast size is around a 30A and to me it's a little embarrassing to have small breasts. I don't like wearing padded bras because they give me a heat rash. What should I do????

Hello,
You should just wait and be happy. Your friends have been developing very young, and that's not always easy. Just think, girls used to get their period around age 16 just 100 years ago. Nowadays, some girls start puberty as young as 8 years old, but it is definitely easier to start it when you are 11-13.

Hi, I have a question... After having seen your site, I saw that my breasts resemble that of the underdeveloped hypoplastic breasts. I'm 17 and I'm very, very self-conscious about it, more so the shape of them. I can't wear any shirt without a padded bra, even tank tops with the bra already lined within the shirt. I was wondering if there was any way to make my breasts take a rounder, fuller shape without surgery? For example, at a doctors office or something. I've heard about the "Brava System," in which you wear this contraption and it grows natural breast tissue; However you have to wait until you're 18 and I just don't want to wait that long, because of personal reasons. If you can help me out at all, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
--Thank you, Kay

Well, I can tell you that Brava is not working for most people. There's a website about Brava user's negative experiences.

Your breasts may still get a fuller shape - especially if you're skinny now. Many girls get more 'feminine curves' in their early twenties, alongside with fuller breasts. And, just because your breast shape is similar to the hypoplastic breasts does not mean yours are TRULY hypoplastic - that condition can only be diagnosed definitely once a woman has had no breast changes during a pregnancy and has failed to produce milk.

I'm 18, and I got my period when I was about 13 1/2. I am 5'3 and weigh 145 lbs. You would think that I would have some form of breasts for being overweight but I don't. I am a full A cup, almost B on my left breast and my right breast is about a cup smaller. I was wondering if I'm probably lacking hormones. My mom had a 34 B cup before having kids and same goes for my father's side... if anything maybe bigger breasts. I don't think my breasts have grown much since 7th grade and I'm already in college. I just turned 18 but I don't know if my breasts will grow. My nipples still look like the budding stage of development... so I don't know. Do u recomend me seeing a doctor? I need all the help I can get.

PS. I don't if this helps, but as a kid during puberty, my brother and I used to fight and I would get hit in my breast at times, I don't know if that would have any affect lol...

It is quite common to have asymmetrical breasts. All women have slight asymmetry, and some women have even 1-2 cup sizes of asymmetry. I cannot say if the physical damage plays a part in your case, but it is possible.

If your period is regular, your female hormones are probably normal. However, if it is irregular, that coupled with being overweight COULD signal a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome. It is getting to be more and more common in teenagers in recent years.

You describe flat nipples - they are normal. Please see our nipple page for more information.

My breasts have always been saggy and I have like a 38C size bra... well I have a boyfriend who always wants to see my breasts, but I tell him no because they look like a 40-year olds who has already had kids. Well I don't tell him that but I know if I show him them, he will have a really weird reaction and I was just wondering if this is normal and if he would probably react weird to this?

Many, many boys and men in the United States do not know what normal female breasts look like, because women are always taught to keep them hidden and because public breastfeeding is not common in all areas. So it is very understandable that men are, first of all, plain curious to see this thing they have not seen before. And second of all, since female breast is made a taboo, something forbidden, that typically just INCREASES the curiosity!

The only knowledge guys have about breasts may very well come from magazines. They might think that normal female breast is big and perky... since that's what the models in mags have.

It's impossible to know how a young man grown up with such lack of knowledge might react to seeing normal female breasts that might sag, be asymmetrical, have stretch marks, etc. If he reacts 'weird', it is probably because of this lack of education. And in a sense, it's not totally his fault - he would just need educated. I would suggest that you try to get any such boyfriend/fiancee/husband to see this website (the Breast gallery pages in particular).

Note also that if someone loves you for what you are and not just for the outward, then he will not be bothered by outward things like this.

My breasts used to be a 32B and they have shrunk. I am now 14 years old and my breasts were bigger when I was thirteen than 14. Why is this happening? Will they grow? They seem to be shrinking more and more. thanks.
Jessica

One reason for shrinking breasts is if you have lost weight. The breasts have fat tissue in them, and if you lose fat from your body overall, you will lose some from your breasts too. There is nothing you can do about this fact. However, please note that if you are NOT overweight, then dieting is not necessarly healthy. Being a lot underweight is as detrimental to health as is being overweight.

The other two common instances when breasts shrink is after woman quits breastfeeding, and at menopause. Those wouldn't normally apply to teenage girls, though. If your situation is not about losing weight, then you might go see a doctor to check your hormone levels in case there is something wrong there.

Hello, my name is stephanie and I am 16 years old and I have no chest at all. I am a 32A. Actually I don't even fit into a A cup. I only weight 95 pounds, but I eat like a big. I hate it so much. I cry every night, because I can't be like any of the other girls. I go to school with a pretend bra that makes people think I have a chest. I hate it because I can't show of my good shape with a tight shirt, I could only wear big t-shirts and I am getting sick of it. I don't go out with any guys cause I don't want them to find out that I am wearing this bra. I don't go shopping with my friends, and I NEVER go shopping for a bathing suit. I just don't want them to find out that I have this bra on. If people find out about this they might tell the whole school and I will be sooo embarrassed. I need help. I haven't got my period yet and I am so sick of not being normal. Can you help me?
stephanie

If your period hasn't started at 16, it is considered delayed puberty. You probably should see a doctor about this.

I'm flat and haven't got my period. I'm 14 and worried. I'm a vegeterian. Could this possibly have any thing to do with my groth and me not having my period?

Tracy Michelle

Breast buds are usually the first sign of puberty. After that comes pubic hair, more breast development, growth spurt, and then your period.

Vegetarians often start puberty later than others. It is not dangerous if your puberty is delayed for that reason. However, there are some other conditions that also cause delayed puberty, so it is recommended to see a doctor if you don't have any signs of puberty by age 14.

I'm 17 years old turning 18 in April and my breasts are small. I'm a 34A. My sisters are both around 36C. Why am I so different? I'm tall, I have big hips, I'm thick around my thighs but I have a small waist. But I don't think being skinny is the issue? I'm on birth control (Jasmine) and I just started yesterday. It's to help regulate my period. I'm still a virgin. Do you think my breasts stopped growing? Do you think birth control will help? Will I grow as I get older? They get VERY sore at times and also tender. Please help me out

Each one of us get a mixture of genes from our mother and father, so your sisters can easily have a different set of genes from you. Your breasts may very well have developed normally and be fully developed, as far as pubertal breast development. Some girls are small breasted - and small breasts are fine and beautiful!

Birth control pills sometimes make a girl's breasts bigger; however even when it happens, it is usually not a permanent change.

You didn't mention when you got your period. Breasts typically stop growing a few years after you get your period. If you breasts get sore just before your period (for a week or so), that is very normal, caused by the increased estrogen & progesterone levels at that time - your body is preparing for a possible pregnancy. Then when the period comes, the hormone levels drop and the breast soreness disappears. The pill should make that soreness disappear as it disrupts the normal cycling of the hormone levels.

My chest is a 32A.. not even.. and my turnabout dance is coming up.. and I bought a dress and it is embarrassing because it is low-cut and I have no breasts.. and I really want boobs.. for that one night... Is there anything for me to do so I can look like I have boobs..?? for that one night??? Please help..PLEASE

Stephanie

You can definitely do something for that one night. You can get a specialty padded bra or get gel inserts to put into the bra cups. Or, perhaps you can sew some padding on the dress itself.

Hi, I am thirteen years old and I am flat chested, I am so obsessed with my boobs I don't go anwhere. I sit home every day, I hate life, I have recently tried to kill myself and I don't know what to do. I am going to try a herbal pill that will try to help. If not, I am going to try to do plastic at home with a friend. Do you think this a good idea?

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you've tried to take your life. As far as your question: I think that trying plastic surgery at home is a foolish idea and definitely will not work.

Remember, breast development takes years. At 13 years of age, you have probably not yet finished developing and going through pubertal changes. Now, it is also possible that you will remain relatively small-breasted or even flat-chested after teen years. Please read our page for flat-chested women. Remember that the PERSON (you) is much more important than ANY body part. People who care about you, realize that, and they care about you no matter what your breast size. You could also try to talk to your mom or dad or both. They probably are very concerned and want to help you.

Also, another good read is our article about Body image, breasts, and puberty. It might help you understand better : the images you see in the TV and magazines of models who have certain kind of breasts.

"I had one of the most long ago breast implants in 1970. I did so because I was flat as a board, and one breast was slightly larger than the other, including the nipples. I was so ashamed of my bodice! Then I saw an add on television - plastic surgeons advertising this new breast augmentation procedure, and I signed up after much thinking.

The doctors must have been very new at what they were doing because fifteen years later my breasts had become so sore and rigid and "fixed" in place that I went to another plastic surgeon who took out my implants and to his horror said that one implant had atrophied and was the size of a golfball. He kept it in a jar as a specimen! He also told me that when he went in to remove the implants, it looked like I had had a partial mastectomy!

Well, I never had had a mastectomy, but it seems the first doctors had taken away much of my own tissue, little that I had, and I hadn't know it! That must have been why I had been in such intense soreness and pain for two months after having the original implants put in! So I may as well call that a partial double masectomy.

The second doctor, who kept my golfball size atrophied removed implant, replaced those old implants with new ones, still silicone. He almost used saline-filled, but changed his mind. However, I requested a smaller size implant this time. I think the original implants were C's, and the newer ones are B's.

My newer (now l2 years old, the new ones) implants are hideously uncomfortable, and I always feel like I'm wearing a push-up bra, only I can't take it off because it's inside me. Bras dig into the scarlines below my breast areas and hurt all day. Also, I, too could not breast-feed my babies. No milk would come out, I think as a result of the implant surgery, which also took away most of the sensation in the nipple area (mostly numb from the start after the original surgery).

If I had these implants removed, I'm afraid to see what I'd look like, what with the little tissue I was born with removed, as well, all those years ago.

However, I have constant nausea, no energy, I lack concentration and retention of reading material, and fear that I had silicone leakage at least from the first pair.

Please feel free to use this letter, but please don't reveal my name. I would advise anyone considering this procedure to NOT have it. It's too high a price to pay to have a more "normal" bodice. It was awful having the uneven pair of little breasts that I was dealt, and it has been wonderful to have a "normal" looking bodice, but I wish I had never had this procedure. I don't know where it all went inside me, and I never feel well for long.

Thank you for your time and consideration."

I am a 22 year old asian female. My breasts are a 32AA. They have stopped growing since I was about 12. I am wondering if this could be a hormone deficiency? I am also worried that my breasts will lack the hormones and capability of producing milk for my children when I become a mother. Is there a doctor that specializes in this? What do you think about my situation?
thanks
A.

First of all, Asian women have smaller breasts in average. I cannot really know if you have a hormone deficiency, but if you do, you would probably have some problem with your period and other symptoms as well.

This may sound new to you, but breast size does not determine the ability to produce milk. Most of the size difference in women's breasts comes from the fat tissue in them, but it's not the fat that makes milk—it's the alveoli, or milk glands. Those glands increase in number during pregnancy. Most likely your breasts will grow during pregnancy and be prepared for the milk production.

Smaller breasts will have smaller storage capacity so the baby will need to nurse more often, but the hormones and milk production work just fine whether the breasts are small or big.

If your breasts do not grow any during a pregnancy, then that is a different issue, and may signal under-developed breasts. In that case you want to be prepared and talk to a lactation consultant before giving birth.

I am 13 and when my boobs get hit they hurt really badly and sometimes even enought to cry. When I have my period adn someone even like accidently taps them I like burst out with pain is that normal and why does it hurt so much when they are hit

Slight tenderness in your breasts is normal while they are developing, and signals they are growing. Also, most women's breasts are tender and sore just before their menstrual period. You might want to check and be careful about what kind of bras you wear. Test if going without bras helps this situation.

If you continue to have lots of pain, you might check with a doctor about it.

I just turned 17 3 months ago and I started my period when I was 13 and I have a big question about my breasts. I am a 34A and I'm not flat chested but my breasts grew pointy and I hate it. I really want to know why this happens. I noticed when I was 12 when all my friends started growing their breasts that their bud was really round, and now when I see them topless they have nice size round breasts. Will my breast ever become round? I am never braless unless the top i am wearing is very tight and makes them look round. I also would like to know what exactly causes your breast to grow from round to pointy?? my mother has very big breasts and I am not asking for huge breasts but I would like nice ROUNDED breasts and I am looking into surgery but I do not like the risks.

This pointed shape is a normal variation. You can find some breasts like that on our gallery pages. A girl's breasts often get rounder when she is in her early 20s, so maybe that will happen to you. Surgery is probably not a permanent fix for this, and I don't even know if they could just "rearrange" breast tissue to change its shape.

I'm a 14 year old girl and my size is 34b and I wanted to know what would be a normal size areola? I know there is no normal size but what would be not small but not large because mine is 7cm by 7cm and I'm really self-conscious about it and cant have showers at school (after PE) mine are still puffed up so will then get un-puffed? And if they do will the size go down too? And do men mind if you have a big areola? Will teenage boys tease me for it?
thank you, katie

My guess is that 7cm by 7cm is a little bigger than average for someone who hasn't been pregnant, but your areola is perfectly normal. Areola size varies a lot, as you know. Mine are about that size too (but I've been pregnant).

The size of areola will not go down. It may increase (usually will) during pregnancy.

I want to stress that your areola is perfectly normal. Teenage boys probably know next to nothing about normal areola sizes - they've only seen maybe a few pics in men's magazines or something of that sort. The models in those may have less than average size areola compared to most adult women. But obviously most teenage boys won't be seeing your areolas (unless you plan to show them publicly... : ) I wouldn't worry about teenage boys, or about men for that matter. If someone would make a remark about your areolas, that just shows THEIR immaturity and stupidity. I mean, you are not planning on making some degrading remark on any body parts of your boyfriend, for example, "You have funny bowed legs" or anything of the sort?? People with any manners wouldn't do that, and in case of areolas, yours are normal anyway.

Just go ahead and take showers after PE. There are probably other girls in your class who are self-conscious about some aspect of their breasts. So you can all just help each other by seeing a little bit of the normal variety.

I am 19 years old and I got my first period when I was 13. My breast size is only 34C. But my mom, my sister, even my cousin (who is younger than me by 2 years) have breast size of 36C. I am kind of embarrassed about my breast size. But I have a big hip (stomach) and a big butt. Whenever I wear a dress by stomach is the one kind of stick out and my breasts wont even show out. Sometime my cousins make fun of that (not in a bad way but just for fun). But I feel like something is wrong with my body. I am overweight. My weight is 156 (height is 5' 1"). Most of the overweight people I see have a big breast. And in your site u stated that losing weight could make ur breast smaller as well. And I am kind of worried to lose my weight now.

Could u please tell me what other possible reasons for my small breast size? Is there any type of bra that would show my breast bigger? Also, (approximately) when (age) does ones breast size (I meant the fifth stage) stop increasing? I am already 19 and I am worried if my breasts won't get any bigger than 34C.
Thank you very much.
Amutha

There is no specific reason a small breast size. It is mostly determined by one's genes. I do not know why some people sometimes have smaller breast size than their relatives. But, it happens and happens quite often. Please don't be afraid of losing weight for your HEALTH'S sake - after all, isn't health more important than breast size? Your breasts MAY indeed get smaller - but small breasts are NORMAL and BEAUTIFUL.

Yes, there are bras that make breasts look bigger. Push-up bras in general have that effect. Then there are padded bras, gel inserts, silicone inserts, etc.

Breasts usually stop growing about 2-3 years after you get your period. But with some women they grow some more even after that. It's not set in stone. Please also read our main Breast development article.

I am 20 years old, I was a late bloomer didn't start my period unill I was 16 or 17... My breasts never even grew untill my 11th grade year of high school. I have always been called madonna or vienie breast. I am worried about my size and my shape of breasts.. For one, I have to wear sports bras cuz the average bra doesn't fit. I have firm breasts. They're pointed but there's no base. Are they ever going to be round? I still have pains in my breasts, they come and go. So I'm guess they're still growing... all I know is that I'm a 36 A or B, depends on the bra... I never wanted breasts in the first place, but if I have to grow, why won't my breast grow right? I don't know if you can say they're saggy..just pointy and stay upward.. Please are my breasts going to stay this way for the rest of my life? Every female on both sides of my family have tits saggy and wear triple D's.. Please I don't want to have breasts that big. Just want breasts round.

April

There is a lot of variation in breast development and in breast sizes among women, so I can't predict exactly how yours will end up. But it sounds like they are still developing. While pointy breasts are normal (because breast shape varies too), there is a chance they will get rounder in a few years because many girls get rounder and a little fuller breasts in their early twenties.

I'm 13 years old and I started menstruating a bit more than a year ago, but before I had gotten my period, my breasts never started to develop too noticeably. My mother is a C or D cup but me and my sister (who is 17 and has on and off periods) both have very small breasts (AA). My mom thinks we will develop but looking at my sister, I don't think it will ever happen. My mom also thinks it has to do with my weight (I'm about 5 foot 4 and 95 pounds) but I look around and everyone my age has boobs and some are even skinnier than me. I've been taking dance since I was 4 and I was wondering if that has to do with it.

You may just have small breasts - BUT your weight and being skinny does definitely affect it too. When there is not much fat in your body, there cannot be much fat in the breasts either. Dance provides you with lots of exercise which makes your body fit, with not much fat. So if you gain weight, your breasts will get somewhat bigger.

HEY THIS IS WHAT BREASTS ARE FOR!
